Does Your Firestick Support Sideloading? How to Check

If you have bought a new Firestick recently and found that Downloader is not working, apps will not install from unknown sources, or the sideloading option is missing entirely from Developer Options, your device is almost certainly running Vega OS — Amazon’s new Linux-based operating system that completely blocks sideloading. This post explains which devices are affected, how to check which OS your Firestick runs, and what your options are.

Important: If your Firestick runs Vega OS, sideloading is permanently blocked. No method will work — not Downloader, not ADB, not Apps2Fire. This is a hardware and software limitation that cannot be bypassed. See the alternatives section below for your options.

What Is Vega OS?

Vega OS is Amazon’s new Linux-based operating system for Fire TV devices. It replaces the Android-based Fire OS that Firesticks have used since launch. Amazon introduced Vega OS on the Fire TV Stick 4K Select in late 2025 and then on the Fire TV Stick HD released April 29 2026. Amazon has confirmed that all future Fire TV Stick models will run Vega OS.

The practical difference for IPTV users is significant. Fire OS was Android-based, which allowed sideloading APK files — including TiviMate, XCIPTV, and other IPTV players not available in the Amazon App Store. Vega OS is Linux-based and has no APK support at all. You can only install apps available in Amazon’s official App Store.

Which Firestick Models Are Affected?

DeviceOSSideloadingNotes
Fire TV Stick HD (2026) Vega OS Blocked Released April 29 2026. App Store only.
Fire TV Stick 4K Select (2025) Vega OS Blocked First Vega OS Fire TV Stick.
Fire TV Stick 4K Max (2023) Fire OS (Android) Supported Last high-end Android model. Still available.
Fire TV Stick 4K Plus Fire OS (Android) Supported Android-based. Sideloading works.
Fire TV Cube (3rd gen) Fire OS (Android) Supported Android-based. Most powerful Fire TV device.
Older Fire TV Sticks (pre-2025) Fire OS (Android) Supported All pre-2025 Fire TV Sticks run Fire OS.

The Fire TV Stick 4K Max and Fire TV Stick 4K Plus are currently the last Android-based Fire TV Sticks supporting sideloading that are still available to buy new. Amazon has confirmed all future Fire TV Stick models will run Vega OS. If buying a Firestick specifically for IPTV sideloading in 2026, verify the model carefully before purchasing.

How to Check Which OS Your Firestick Runs

  1. On your Firestick home screen go to Settings
  2. Select My Fire TV
  3. Select About
  4. Look at the Software Version or OS Version field

What you will see:

  • Fire OS 7.x or Fire OS 8.x — Android-based. Sideloading is supported. Follow the standard Downloader setup.
  • Vega OS or no Fire OS version number visible — Sideloading is permanently blocked. See alternatives below.

If Your Firestick Runs Fire OS — Sideloading Still Works

If your device shows Fire OS 7 or 8 everything in our existing Firestick IPTV setup guide applies. Use Downloader (code 540646 for TiviMate, 730116 for XCIPTV) and follow the standard sideloading process. The guide is still fully accurate for Fire OS devices.

If Your Firestick Runs Vega OS — Your Options

Option 1 — Use IPTV Smarters Pro from the Amazon App Store

IPTV Smarters Pro is available directly in the Amazon App Store and works on Vega OS devices without any sideloading. It supports M3U and Xtream Codes, is completely free, and covers the core IPTV use case. It is not as feature-rich as TiviMate but it works on Vega OS devices natively. See our IPTV Smarters Pro review for full details.

Option 2 — Switch to an Android TV box

An Android TV box running standard Android TV or Google TV supports full sideloading including TiviMate, XCIPTV, and every other IPTV player. The Onn 4K Pro streaming box ($50) and Chromecast with Google TV ($30) are the most affordable options and both support sideloading via Downloader. See our best Firestick alternatives guide for a full comparison.

Option 3 — Keep your existing Fire OS Firestick

If you have an older Android-based Firestick that works well, keep using it. Amazon has confirmed it will support existing Fire OS devices with security updates through at least 2030 or for four years from purchase. Your current sideloaded apps will continue to work.

Option 4 — Return or exchange the Vega OS device

If you bought a new Firestick recently expecting sideloading support and found it blocked, check Amazon’s return window. If within the return period, exchanging for a Fire TV Stick 4K Max or 4K Plus (both Android-based) restores full sideloading capability.

What About TiviMate on Vega OS?

TiviMate cannot be installed on Vega OS devices. It is not available in the Amazon App Store and sideloading is blocked. This is one of the most significant practical consequences of the Vega OS transition for IPTV users. TiviMate remains available and fully functional on Fire OS devices and on Android TV boxes. See our TiviMate review for supported platforms.

If you have a Vega OS device and want TiviMate functionality, an Android TV box is the most direct solution. See our Firestick alternatives guide for options at every price point.
